EemsEnergyTerminal Project Overview

The EemsEnergyTerminal, operational since September 16, 2022, in Eemshaven, Netherlands, was developed to bolster energy security and reduce dependency on Russian natural gas. The floating LNG terminal, a joint venture by Gasunie and Vopak, processes up to 8 billion cubic meters of LNG annually, with plans to expand to 10 bcm. This state-of-the-art facility was completed in a record six months, earning the accolade of “Best LNG Project of the Year 2022” for its groundbreaking execution and contributions to Europe’s energy transition.

Equipped with two Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRUs), Golar Igloo and Eemshaven LNG, the terminal converts LNG into natural gas, supplying it to the Dutch national gas pipeline network. The project also establishes vital groundwork for future green hydrogen imports, aligning with global sustainability goals.

Our Role in the Project

We played a pivotal role in ensuring the safe and efficient execution of this landmark project. Our contributions included:

Field Supervision and HSE Coordination: 

• A dedicated team of 10 members worked in multiple shifts, ensuring around-the-clock coverage.
• Oversaw field site supervision and coordinated permit-to-work systems, including hot works, while managing complex simultaneous operations (SIMOPS).

Safety and Risk Management: 

• Supported lifting operations involving heavy and intricate machinery.
• Collaborated with the local fire department to implement comprehensive fire prevention and guarding measures.
• Established a medical facility on-site, staffed by a qualified nurse, to address the challenges posed by the remote location and significant distance to the nearest hospital.

Marine Operations and Emergency Readiness: 

• Facilitated marine activities along the jetty, ensuring smooth coordination of vessel operations and LNG transfers.
• Maintained readiness to respond to emergencies related to marine and site-based activities.

HSE Documentation and Audits: 

• Developed tailored HSE procedures and plans, maintaining audit records for evaluations conducted by local authorities, external reviewers, and major stakeholders, including Shell.

By integrating expert supervision, safety planning, and seamless coordination, we supported the EemsEnergyTerminal’s successful commissioning, setting a high standard for LNG project execution.

Our team ensured compliance with international and local HSE standards throughout all operations at the EemsEnergyTerminal. This included:

• Conducting risk assessments for complex and various activities to identify and mitigate potential hazards.

• Training personnel on best practices for managing high-risk tasks, such as simultaneous operations (SIMOPS), heavy lifting, and fire prevention.
